T he Robbery brings us into a pretty weird situation. While we are used to some common criminal expression in cinematography, this story goes on an extreme approach to sense of crime. A girl does a total break out of social order in an utterly amateur way. Her perception of the happening is like she is a witness of herself, not the center of the events to take control of the situation.

Is the taken drug the only reason behind her stupidity? For sure yes. Drugs like ketamine, amphetamine and others can disturb the activity of particular brain area, leading to sometimes unrealized behavioral anomalies, felt completely normal. But drugs are not enough for this fiasco. Her lack of vision for a better choice makes you ask what led her to this incapability of distinguishing reality of her own mind. Altered mind drives her onto a dangerous ride of bullets, which she even doesn’t bring to an end as the virtual sub reality seems to be more important than her own life. The mess in her head could be the mess in many others. Keeping your mind clean and peaceful have never been more challenging in a world of arising cult to the eternal but cold world of virtuality.

This mad situation is rarely funny, bringing out the blackest sense of humor, sucking up this absurdity, but also feels so close to our reality. It is a sad story, touching our empathy while watching her lack of power and gradual acceleration to hell. At some point we are not as much into the crime as into her position, her life and identity. Why? We experience an intimate moment, abnormally long for such life staking combat of unfolded guilt, shame and the deeply disturbing sense of irreversibility. Not only her close acquaintances don’t realize the nature of her situation, but she is not able to trust herself either. We feel like we are with her, but she couldn’t be more alone in this seemingly totally lost perspective of the world and her true presence.

Jim Cummings have managed to bring a complex tangle of rare emotions, mixed up with mind inadequacy to a straight line story, providing long lasting, masterly played thrill, that keeps us at the edge of our seats. We should also admit these situations are mad, but, in the same time, inspired by the real world. With technological advancement, humans seem to be unprepared and not aware of how disturbingly deep they let the digital subreality to penetrate their true, organic experience of reality. It’s as good as a cold shower to see such a fine crafted piece of cinematography diving into the darkest and most unpredictable mazes of human nature.
